Understand the pathway

What is Ausbildung?

Ausbildung is vocational education that prepares you for a specific occupation. It combines structured learning, practical tasks and examinations leading to a professional qualification. The learning model, duration and payment depend on the occupation and training provider.

Dual vocational training

In a dual programme, you train with a company and attend a vocational school, called a Berufsschule. Workplace practice and school lessons may alternate during the week or take place in blocks. Trainees receive a training allowance.

School-based vocational training

School-based programmes centre on lessons at a vocational school with practical placements. Payment and tuition vary. Many programmes do not pay a training salary; healthcare training has paid exceptions. Check the specific school and programme.

Choose the right route: Ausbildung is vocational training. A university degree, dual study programme and recognition of an existing overseas professional qualification are different pathways with their own requirements.

Prepare your profile

Who can apply?

Education & suitability

Dual training has no single legally required school qualification for all occupations; employers set their criteria. School-based programmes require the relevant school qualification and its recognition. Check your chosen programme before arranging translations or recognition.

There is no general upper age limit for starting Ausbildung. Employer preferences and visa circumstances still matter; a separate training-place search visa has its own age rule.

Language & preparation

German is essential for communicating at work, understanding lessons and taking examinations. B1 is the usual general starting benchmark; some programmes require a higher level.

Prepare a clear CV, explain why you chose the profession and practise discussing your background in German. Relevant internships, projects or work experience can strengthen your application.

Your programme decides the details. Do not assume one fixed age range, percentage requirement or language certificate applies to every employer and occupation.

Your language foundation

German preparation at Language Live

Our online and offline German courses in Jaipur cover A1 to B2, alongside Goethe and telc exam preparation. Build everyday communication first, then practise the language you need for applications, interviews and vocational learning.

A1–A2: Build the basics

Practise introductions, daily routines, questions and common workplace situations. Develop consistent listening, reading, speaking and writing habits.

B1: Communicate independently

Explain your education and motivation, describe experiences and handle more detailed conversations. Practise giving clear answers in an interview.

B2: Prepare for greater demands

Work on detailed explanations, discussions, longer texts and professional vocabulary. Use this stage to prepare for more demanding communication.

Check the exact language requirement: The federal portal normally indicates B1 for qualified training. The German Missions in India currently describe A2 for some training cases and B1 for medical professions, with case-specific conditions. Nursing schools may require B2. Follow your provider’s requirement and the current visa checklist; a lower visa threshold does not establish school eligibility.

From preparation to arrival

How to apply from India

  1. Choose your occupation

Compare your interests, qualifications and practical strengths with real training advertisements. Check the location, start date and entry criteria.

  2. Prepare your German

Work towards the level required by your employer, school and visa route. Plan time for exam preparation and certification where needed.

  3. Create your application

Prepare a CV and a tailored cover letter. Collect school certificates, language evidence and relevant experience documents.

  4. Apply & attend interviews

Search employer websites and official job boards. Practise discussing your motivation and ask questions about the training arrangements.

  5. Review the contract & visa requirements

Read your training contract carefully. Check payment, accommodation arrangements, required financial proof and the current German Missions checklist.

  6. Prepare for departure

After visa approval, arrange travel, insurance and accommodation. Confirm your arrival plan and the administrative steps with your training provider.

When to start: Many programmes begin in August or September, and applications can open 12–18 months earlier. Other intakes exist. Use the advertised deadline and allow time for German learning, selection and the visa process.

Plan your finances

Training salary, living expenses & costs

There is no single salary for every Ausbildung. Check the allowance in your contract for each training year and distinguish gross pay from the amount received after deductions. Accommodation, meals and travel are included only if expressly agreed.

Pathway discussion

Discuss Ausbildung options and your preparation needs. Ask about the current scope, fees and availability of application, interview and visa guidance.

Employer selection, admission and visa decisions belong to the relevant organisations and authorities. Ask for a written service scope and fee breakdown before booking additional assistance.

After successful training

Your qualification can support applications for skilled work and further professional development. Employment depends on vacancies, your performance and the requirements of the role. After qualified vocational training in Germany, a job-search residence permit of up to 18 months may be available, subject to the applicable conditions. Assistant-level care training follows different provisions.

Before finishing, discuss your career plans with your employer and check your next residence step with the competent authority.

Common questions

Ausbildung FAQs

Is Ausbildung a university degree?

No. Ausbildung leads to a vocational qualification. A university course or dual study programme follows a different educational route.

Can Indian students apply?

Yes. Applicants need to meet the training provider’s entry criteria and the requirements of the relevant visa route.

Do I need B1 or B2 German?

Check your particular programme. B1 is the usual general benchmark for qualified training; nursing and other programmes may require B2. Prepare for the language needed in lessons and at work as well as the visa evidence.

Is every Ausbildung paid?

Dual programmes pay a training allowance. School-based programmes vary; many are unpaid, while healthcare training has paid exceptions. Read the contract or school terms.

Do I always need a blocked account?

No. The requirement depends on the route and accepted evidence of funding. A sufficient company training allowance can establish livelihood; additional proof may be needed if it falls short.

Is there an age limit?

Starting Ausbildung has no general upper age limit. Employer criteria and visa circumstances must still be checked. The separate visa for seeking a training place has an under-35 rule on the federal portal.

When should I apply?

Start early and follow the employer’s deadline. Many August or September intakes recruit well in advance; other start dates are programme-specific.

Are accommodation and flights included?

Only when the employer or a written service agreement expressly includes them. Ask who pays, whether deductions apply and what happens if plans change.

Are admission, a job or a visa guaranteed?

No. Employers decide selection and the German authorities decide visas. Language courses and guidance help you prepare but cannot guarantee these outcomes.
